Lab Data Guides Critical Care
Real-time data can make all the difference in accurate and effective patient care treatment. One example of this is receiving lab data to determine—does the patient need medication now or not? A potassium level that is too low or too high (oftentimes, too low) can assist the patient in receiving a replacement to help correct their dysrhythmia or severe muscle weakness. That has happened on occasion for me when caring for a patient in the critical care area. Sometimes information such as an MD's order or a patient's decision has altered care. A patient or family member tells the medical team about their end-of-life care decision, and that has greatly altered the care we provide or, sometimes, don't provide to that client.

Every day, I use real-time data to aid in care planning. Using computerized analytics, we encompass awareness of the nature of our patients' nervous system dysfunction to better care plan. I can utilize data collected that very moment as part of our evaluation of the patient, review and share those results with the person to support them in understanding their health challenge and how our approach can aid them. That care planning information assists me in determining the initial visit frequency and treatment method that will best match that person and their needs. It also supports me in discussing or recommending other supportive or ancillary treatment services that might be indicated or possibly contraindicated for the individual.
